NRI Investment Planning for India – Build Wealth in India from Anywhere
For Non-Resident Indians, India represents one of the most compelling investment opportunities in the world – a fast-growing economy, rising equity markets, strengthening real estate values and relatively high fixed deposit rates compared to developed countries. Many NRIs want to invest in India but are uncertain about the rules, account types, repatriation implications and tax treatment.
At OakRise Fincorp, we provide NRI-specific investment planning services – from account setup and fund selection to ongoing portfolio management and tax-efficient structuring of India investments. We serve NRI clients in the UAE, USA, UK, Canada and Australia with a fully remote, digital service model.
NRI Investment Services
NRE vs NRO Account Guidance
NRE (Non-Resident External) accounts hold foreign earnings converted to INR – fully repatriable with tax-free interest. NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) accounts hold India-sourced income (rent, dividends) – partially repatriable with interest taxable in India at 30%. Choosing the right account type for each investment is critical.
NRI Mutual Fund Investment
Guiding NRIs through the KYC, PAN and account setup process for mutual fund investments in India. We recommend funds based on your goals, investment timeline and risk profile – same personalised approach as for resident clients.
NRE Fixed Deposits
NRE fixed deposits offer attractive interest rates (currently 6-7.5% from major banks), are fully repatriable and the interest is tax-free in India. Ideal for medium-term savings in INR with higher returns than deposits in developed countries.
India Real Estate Investment Guidance
NRIs can purchase residential and commercial property in India (not agricultural land). We provide guidance on tax implications of rental income, capital gains on future sale, repatriation of sale proceeds and FEMA compliance.
Sovereign Gold Bonds
Sovereign Gold Bonds issued by RBI are available to NRIs – backed by government, linked to gold price, earn 2.5% annual interest and have no storage risk. Currently available on the secondary market.
Portfolio Review and Monitoring
Annual review of your India investment portfolio – fund performance, goal progress, tax position and rebalancing recommendations – delivered digitally wherever you are in the world.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between NRE and NRO accounts for investments?
NRE accounts are funded with foreign earnings – every rupee in an NRE account can be freely repatriated abroad and interest is tax-free in India. NRO accounts hold India-sourced income (rent, dividends, salary for India work) – repatriation is limited to USD 1 million per financial year and interest is taxed at 30% TDS. For maximum investment flexibility, NRIs prefer investing through NRE accounts.
Can NRIs invest in equity mutual funds in India?
Yes, subject to FEMA compliance. NRIs can invest in equity and debt mutual funds through NRE or NRO accounts. USA and Canada-based NRIs face restrictions as many AMCs do not accept their investments due to FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) reporting requirements. We identify which AMCs accept US/Canada NRI investments.
Is NRE fixed deposit interest really tax-free?
Yes. Interest earned on NRE fixed deposits and NRE savings accounts is completely exempt from income tax in India. This is a significant advantage compared to NRO deposits where interest is taxed at 30% TDS. NRE FD rates at major Indian banks are typically 6-7.5% annually – higher than US, UK or UAE equivalents.
Can NRIs buy property in India?
Yes. NRIs can freely purchase residential and commercial property in India without any prior RBI permission. Agricultural land, plantation property and farmhouse cannot be purchased. The purchase can be funded through NRE/NRO account funds. NRIs are subject to TDS deduction (by the seller) on property purchase under Section 195 if buying from another NRI. We guide on all these nuances.
How can NRIs invest if they do not have a PAN card?
PAN is mandatory for all investments and tax filing in India. NRIs can apply for a new PAN or update an existing PAN with their current address abroad. We assist with the complete PAN application process for NRIs, which can be done online with Indian passport as proof of identity.
